History of Peaches

History of Peaches

Peaches were originally from Persia but the arguments exist that they first originated in China. Chinese claim that it was present in their country from ancient times and was mentioned in their writings which were from the 10th century B.C, and was the favorite fruit of the emperors. The English name has been derived from the Latin name Persicum Malum which means that it is a Persian Apple and is called a peach by most western countries. The story continues that the Persians had brought the fruit from China and passed it on to the Romans, and they passed it on to the Spanish and so on. The Peach fruit thus became popular in America by being passed on from one place to another. It is said that the Peach was originally brought to America by the Spanish explorers back in the sixteenth century.

It was so fascinating and fine as a fruit that now it is grown by so many countries so that they can have their own peach and eat them too. A few historians believe that the peach fruit was first brought to America by the French explorers sometime in the fifteenth century along the gulf coast in Alabama. The Spanish could have brought it from there to the Atlantic seaboard and Florida. But it is the American Indians who spread the peach trees by planting them from the seed of the peach fruit. The peach is a fast growing plant and produces results pretty fast. Soon after that people started believing that the peach is actually a Native American fruit and were always there in America. Even now the belief exists that the peach is an American fruit.

It is amazing how some things travel around the entire world and carry this rich unraveled history about them. William Bartram was a famous American botanist who wrote in his book that he had observed the ancient plum orchards and peaches in Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama. Somehow he considered that there is a possibility that the peach fruit may have been native to America but was left undiscovered in the past.
